KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, Illinois basketball’s two biggest talents led the Illini to
victory over a top-20 opponent. But on Saturday, they failed to show enough brilliance to hand Illinois its second
top-20 victory in as many weeks.
The Illini seniors Terrence Shannon (22 points, 5-16 FG) and Marcus Domask (six points, 2-for-11 FG) combined for
just 28 points on 7-for-27 shooting in the No. 20-ranked Illini’s 86-79 loss to the No. 17-ranked Volunteers (6-3) at
Food City Center on Saturday. This came after they had combined for 66 points on 25-for-35 shooting in a victory
over Florida Atlantic.
Dalton Knecht, the key player for Tennessee, ended the Vols’ three-game losing record against top-25 opponents
with a game-high 21 points. Adding 12 points and 9 rebounds, Santiago Vescovi
Quincy Guerrier scored a season-high 22 points (7-for-14 FG, 3-for-8 from three) and Coleman Hawkins scored a
season-high 12 points (4-for-13 FG, 3-for-10 from three) for the Illini (7-2). However, the supporting cast did step up
for the Illini. Off the bench, Luke Goode contributed eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Illinois, who had dominated Florida Atlantic in the paint, was a terrible shooting team (35.4%) and had to settle for
three-point shooting (9-for-36). The majority of Shannon’s damage occurred at the free-throw line (11-for-11) and
late in the second half.
