Whether you like it or not, the transfer portal is currently a crucial component of college football. It would be
imprudent for the Wolverines to entirely disregard the transfer portal during the open window, even though
Michigan has larger fish to pursue in December. Building a roster and recruiting new players never stop.
Since its launch, Jim Harbaugh and company have benefited immensely from the transfer site. This season, Josh
Wallace, LaDarius Henderson, A.J. Barner, Josaiah Stewart, and Drake Nugent have all been essential to Michigan’s
success. However, the coaching staff has made it clear that they do not plan to start from scratch with the program;
rather, they want to use the portal to fill in gaps.
In light of this, how involved do you believe Michigan should be in the
Going into 2024, the position at quarterback is the most uncertain. There are several arguments in favor of J.J.
McCarthy continuing his education. Rather than being somewhere between QB3 and QB7 in the 2024 class, he might
be QB1 in the 2025 draft class. In 2024, he might gain by having more work to do in order to increase his draft stock.
But there are also a gazillion other reasons McCarthy should quit.
If McCarthy chooses to enter the draft, Michigan will have a lot of alternatives in 2024. Jadyn Davis is a true
freshman that the Wolverines might start if they want to take a chance. They might assess Alex Orji’s passing ability
and see how effectively he can set up the offense with a running quarterback. My guess is that they test the waters in
Michigan also needs other things. At this stage, it is quite difficult to forecast the roster because, when the season
ends, more than twenty players will need to make a stay-or-go choice. Will Michigan continue to succeed at
attracting the appropriate transfers as we have seen?
Using the transfer gateway does have a drawback, for sure. Should transfers be prioritized above domestically
developed talent, the latter may decide to transfer out. Establishing a culture is also much more challenging when
your program has large player groups that are only there for a single year. Player development and scouting are clear
areas of strength for the Michigan coaching staff. It would be unfortunate if they were unable to
In light of all mentioned above, as a fan, what do you want to get out of the transfer portal? Do you wish to obtain all
those who express interest? Should J.J. McCarthy declare, do you think Dante Moore should start for Michigan next
season? Do you think that the football team’s use of the gateway will be hampered by Michigan’s stringent academic
admissions rules, as the basketball program has seen?
