March 13 is the official start of free agency, and the 49ers need a tight end. Logan Thomas ought to be signed by them.
The 49ers aren’t searching for a starter, so he’s hardly the greatest tight end available. A No. 2 tight end who can play alongside George
Kittle and fill in for him occasionally is what they’re searching for. Thomas would be ideal.
He was just cut by the Washington Commanders, who are rebuilding. He will turn 33 the following season. It’s likely that the 49ers
might sign him to a $4 million one-year contract. He’d also be worthwhile.
Kittle caught 65 receptions and scored six touchdowns last season; Thomas caught 55 passes and scored four. For a year, they would
make such a great combination. Recall that the 49ers signed Jordan Reed, a former tight end for Washington, a few years ago to
partner with Kittle on the ground, but Reed was never able to remain healthy. Since then, the 49ers have not had a strong No. 2 tight
end. Thomas has the power to alter that.
The 49ers’ current reserve tight ends are Brayden Willis, whose biggest (only?) play of the previous season was a penalty in overtime of
the Super Bowl; Charlie Woerner, a stiff; Ross Dwelley, who never plays; and Cam Latu, who was unable to even make the squad the
previous year.
Thomas would be a far better choice than any of them.
The 49ers could, of course, draft a tight end, but they failed in their attempt to select a tight end last season (Latu). Signing a well-
known player is preferable, especially if he’s reasonably priced.
