Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, 25, is a fantastic player, according to former Napoli forward Stefan Schwoch, but the 25-year-old
isn’t very good at penalties.
Schwoch mentioned Osimhen’s missed penalty kick during Napoli’s 2-1 victory against Juventus in his remarks on Tuesday during the
Italian TV show Il bello del calcio.
Kvicha Kvaratskhelia gave the home team the lead with a volley just before halftime. Federico Chiesa then gave Juventus an equalizer,
and in the last moments of play, Osimhen gave Napoli a chance to win the match after Joseph Nonge’s foul gave rise to a penalty.
Wojciech Szczęsny saved Osimhen’s penalty, though, and Giacomo Raspadori converted the rebound to give Napoli their 12th victory
of the year.
Osimhen has missed three of his seven efforts at a penalty spot against the Bianconeri, making it nearly half of his total misses.
Schwoch feels that this is an excessive number of failures.
Given his posture, it is hard to overlook saving it (Osimhen’s penalty). It is too much to make three mistakes in seven attempts from
the spot.
Osimhen scored just one goal in Nigeria’s recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast, where the country placed
second. Even though he had won two penalties during the competition, captain and tournament MVP William Troost-Ekong stepped
up and scored both of the team’s penalties in the AFCON.
This supports Schwoch’s claims that Osimhen lacks proficiency with penalties even further.
Osimhen has been in outstanding form for Napoli since returning from the 2023 AFCON, scoring five goals in four games—including a
hat-trick against Sassuolo on Wednesday—since then.
The 25-year-old has contributed three assists and 11 goals in 16 league appearances this season.
