Trey Moore, a rising redshirt junior from the UTSA Roadrunners, was signed by the Texas Longhorns on Saturday,
surpassing the Alabama Crimson Tide. Moore is the only one of the three players that Texas head coach Steve
Sarkisian and his staff have access to talent from the NCAA transfer portal since it opened in December, as he is
ranked No. 13 nationally by 247Sports.
Moore broke Marcus Davenport’s school record with 18 tackles for loss among 59 total tackles, 30 solo stops, 8 sacks,
6 pass breakups, 5 quarterback hurries, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery after a redshirt season in 2021.
Moore also earned Freshman All-American honors.
As a redshirt sophomore in 2023, the talented edge elevated his game and won the AAC Defensive Player of the Year
award. He recorded 45 total tackles, including 30 solo stops, 17.5 tackles for loss, and a school-record 14 sacks. He
also added three interceptions, three quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and three pass
breakups.
Moore is now in Texas to play for the Longhorns, his childhood passion, and to compete in the SEC in an attempt to
raise his draft position in the NFL Draft.
After studying about 125 snaps of Moore’s play against Texas State, Houston, and Tennessee, here’s how he fits at
Texas.
An effective edge rusher
Prior to examining Moore’s skill set, it’s important to consider how successful he was in 2023 when going after the
quarterback at UTSA. Only four players in Texas history have ever recorded 14 sacks in a single season, with Kiki
DeAyala setting the record with 22.5 sacks in 1982. With 13 in 2013, Jackson Jeffcoat has the most over the past ten
seasons.
