Aston Villa’s bonus structure has been redesigned by Unai Emery to guarantee that players would receive further incentives solely in
the event that they make it to Europe or take home a trophy this year.
Chelsea eliminated Emery’s team from the FA Cup on Wednesday. The team has struggled a bit since Christmas. But, going into this
weekend’s matchup with Manchester United at Villa Park, they are only five points behind league leaders Liverpool thanks to their
strong play in the first half of the season.
Villa’s team has been handed incentives since rejoining the Premier League, contingent on both league standing and future
competition performance. But under Emery, these will only be provided if Villa wins the Europa League or if they are able to compete
in Europe the following season.
Later this month, Villa will find out who their final 16 opponents are in that competition.
The Basque is committed to raising the bar at Villa every time, and he thinks the current bonus structure is a more accurate indicator
of development. Villa’s performance may have declined recently, but there are favorable circumstances.
Defenders Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne, and Ezri Konsa are now out, and Pau Torres is just healthy enough to play as a substitute.
That might very well be their starting back four, as Emiliano Buendia, like Mings, has been sidelined for an extended period of time,
and backup forward Jhon Duran has also missed time due to injury.
Emery is keen to bolster the team once more this summer, although Villa, like many of their opponents, will need to be aware of the
Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.
The midfield players Douglas Luiz, Ramsey, and Boubacar Kamara are all highly regarded, and due to spending restrictions, Villa
would have to take serious offers into consideration.
