Sure, it was amusing, but it wasn’t a masterpiece. Super Bowl 58 would not be considered for an Oscar in terms of film. It was more
akin to one of those formulaic action movies, the kind where you know the main character would triumph despite getting into all these
situations. The conclusion is known to you. Still, you continue to observe.
That outcome loomed for more than four hours on Sunday night. The 49ers of San Francisco were the ideal adversary. They made a lot
of mistakes, but they also made a lot of right ones. This is a misplaced punt. There was an extra point that was blocked. settling for an
overtime field goal from 27 yards out. keeping the door open for the one NFL player who knows how to take advantage of it.
This Super Sunday, quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs
With the Chiefs’ 25-22 overtime victory, Mahomes—who has amassed an incredible body of work before turning 29—has now won
three championships in six years. The Chiefs led by Mahomes have won three of the previous five Super Bowls. Of the last five, they
have participated in four. For the first time since the New England Patriots did it to end the 2004 season, they have triumphed in
back-to-back titles, smirking alongside Jake from State Farm at the NFL’s aspirations of parity.
One player hasn’t carried the Chiefs this far alone. They made wise choices throughout the off-season. Throughout the process, they
haven’t shied away from making difficult decisions—do you recall when they let Tyreek Hill go in order to save money? They’ve had
outstanding drafting.
The Tennessee Titans should take note of the fact that seven starters on the Chiefs’ defense were selected in the first round since 2020,
as reported by The Athletic. That’s amazing, given that Kansas City hasn’t selected higher than No. 21 overall since selecting Mahomes
at No. 10 in 2017.
In the fourth round of the 2020 draft, the Chiefs selected cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. A year later, they selected guard Trey Smith out
of Tennessee in the sixth round. In 2022, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was ranked 11 positions below running back Isiah Pacheco,
who was selected in the seventh round.
Mahomes cannot be compared to anyone else, unless you go back in time to see Tom Brady or perhaps Joe Montana. This is a select
group of quarterbacks who have excelled in the largest, most intense limelight, winning numerous rings and being considered
excellent.
When it counted most on Sunday, the Chiefs scored on each of their final four possessions after scoring six points on their opening
nine possessions. When those drives began, too, they followed.
Towards the end of the game, Mahomes led Kansas City on marches of 12, 11, and 13 plays, tying the score thrice with field goals before
winning in overtime. Mahomes completed 16 of 21 passes for 151 passing yards on the three drives. Mahomes was also the Chiefs’ top
rusher with 66 yards.
