Notable NFL insiders like ESPN’s Mike Reiss and CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso predict that the New England Patriots will select Ohio
State Buckeyes wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. third overall, rather than North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye or LSU
Tigers signal-caller Jayden Daniels, should the Chicago Bears select USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams first in the player-
selection process.
In a recent interview with Karen Guregian of MassLive, reputable quarterback coach George Whitfield stated that New England “can’t
go wrong” by selecting Maye or Daniels with the third overall draft choice.
Last week, Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports and Trapasso both anticipated that Daniels will be selected by the Washington Commanders
with the second overall choice. Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus connected Washington with Maye and New England with
Daniels in a mock draft that was updated on Monday.
This offseason, the Patriots are anticipated to let go of 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones and may choose to start an experienced
quarterback, like Joe Flacco of the Cleveland Browns, this autumn instead of a rookie.
Whitfield on the other hand called Daniels “a prolific downfield passer” who “can make all of the throws.”
Baker Mayfield, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is apparently at least partly interested in joining the Patriots should
he become a free agent. By paying Mayfield, New England would be able to select a playmaker like Harrison at No. 3 rather than a
signal-caller. However, Tampa Bay has until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to use the franchise tag to keep Mayfield.
