Yesterday, Justin Turner agreed to a $13 million one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, adding another blow to the Red Sox
squad. I was dubious about Turner’s signing in the summer, thinking that his poor play in the first half of 2022 would be his downfall.
However, Turner surprised me by becoming the Sox’s most dependable offensive player the previous year. His defeat doesn’t really
affect me because I still think he will be looked cooked sooner rather than later (which might happen this year). However, he was a
right-handed power threat who could lead the clubhouse and cover the corner infield positions, both of which the Red Sox desperately
need.
Are the Sox planning to spend another cent in the summer on anyone if they are already offering guys like Turner and Paxton, proven
commodities who were successful in Boston, low-cost one-year deals? It’s not as though the group lacks funds. According to this salary
breakdown, the Sox should start the season with around $190 million. (MassLive, Christopher Smith)
Perhaps Matt Barnes and I will cross paths again in the future. The reliever, a free agent, will give prospective teams a demonstration.

Perhaps Triston Casas will have a season worthy of an MVP to help offset Turner’s offensive loss. Jonathan Papelbon recently likened
Casas to David Ortiz, suggesting that he believes it is doable. (WEEI’s Ryan Gilbert)
Last but not least, former manager Jimy Williams, who was 80 years old, passed away. This means that the Red Sox extended family
has lost a member. Williams is the kind of character you don’t see too often in the game these days; he was a scruffy lifer who used
homemade metaphors in his speech and wasn’t afraid to reprimand the greatest players. His team’s success in the 1995 AL East was
largely attributed to his leadership. (The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey)
