After weeks of rumors, the Chicago Bears have allegedly dealt quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The former Ohio State standout Fields will compete with recently acquired Russell Wilson for playing time in Pittsburgh, where the
Bears will receive a sixth-round pick that may become a fourth-round selection depending on Fields’ playing time. Wilson, who still
owes the Seattle Seahawks franchise $39 million, was cut by the Denver Broncos. He recently signed a one-year contract for the
veteran’s minimum with Pittsburgh.
After the Bears secured the first choice in next month’s NFL Draft, where they are anticipated to select a quarterback, Fields was
viewed as expendable by many.
Considering that the Bears selected Fields with the 11th overall pick just three years prior, the return is minimal.
The dynamic native of Georgia has since thrown for 40 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in addition to scoring 14 more points on the
ground. After missing the playoffs in 2023, the Bears were 10-28 in games that he started, but they showed no signs of being eager to
trade him.
Rather, the Bears kept Fields as they kept an eye on elite quarterback prospects like Caleb Williams of USC, Jayden Daniels of LSU,
and Drake Maye of North Carolina.
When DailyMail.com asked the Bears and Steelers for confirmation, no one from their respective teams answered right away.
Before the Falcons and 35-year-old Kirk Cousins agreed to a reputed $180 million contract, Fields was almost certainly going to play
for Atlanta.
The low market created a dilemma for the Bears, who are believed to be aiming to use one of their two top-10 draft picks on Williams,
since general manager Ryan Poles of Chicago still retains two picks in the top 10.
The Bears choose to give the Panthers the rights to the first pick in 2023 by passing on Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State’s C.J.
Stroud. As a result, the Bears have the first pick in the draft. The Bears acquired wide receiver DJ Moore along with Carolina’s first-
round selections in 2023 and 2024 in exchange for Young.
General managers who are trying to get rid of quarterbacks who are nosediving in value are familiar with this situation. In return for
Mac Jones, who was taken 15th overall in 2021—four spots after Fields was selected by the Bears—the Patriots agreed to accept a sixth-
round pick.
Trey Lance, the third overall pick in the draft, was dealt from the San Francisco 49ers to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-
round selection.
Zach Wilson, the No. 2 pick in 2021, hasn’t attracted any interest despite the Jets granting him permission to pursue a trade last
month.
