The San Francisco 49ers have made that their recurring theme in free agency. They have signed players who have all played on the
defensive end of the game. It’s strange that in light of the offensive line problems, not a single new offensive player has been signed.
The 49ers haven’t yet signed any offensive free agents, though, for a reason. It’s a result of their lack of necessity. Where on the field do
the 49ers need to add players, except the offensive line? Their offense doesn’t need a free agent addition at any position. And it’s not
like a deficiency of skill is the cause of any offensive problems.
Having five All-Pro players on offense means the 49ers don’t have to search for anyone. Wide receiver, tight end, running back, and
quarterback are all doing great. Again, the 49ers don’t need to add offensive free agents, though a receiver-focused tight end would be
good.
Yes, the offensive line needs some TLC, but offensive linemen are getting ridiculous salaries thanks to free agency. That is the current
cost of doing business. It is illogical for the 49ers to overpay for skill whose compensation doesn’t match as players are fetching higher
prices than their true worth.
Examine Mike McGlinchey from the previous year. He is not even close to being worth the $55 million guaranteed contract that the
Denver Broncos signed him to. The 49ers have little incentive to pursue offensive free agent signings in the opening week of the season
since the offensive line is no longer an option. Now, to cover for the absentee players, I’m sure there will be one or two in the upcoming
weeks.
So far, their treatment of free agency has been sufficient.
