Toto Wolff, the principal of the Mercedes team, has replied to the impending departure of another important ally at his team.
Jerome D’Ambrosio is set to depart Mercedes and join rival team Ferrari, as previously reported by RacingNews365 earlier this
month.
D’Ambrosio had an informal employment relationship with Mercedes before to his appointment as Driver Development Director in
2023.
He filled in for Wolff for the Grands Prix in Qatar and Japan the previous year, while the Austrian was sidelined due to knee surgery.
But the departure of the former Formula One driver signals the arrival of another important player at Ferrari, following the Italian
team’s success in luring Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.
In an interview with RacingNews365 and other media outlets on D’Ambrosio, Wolff said, “I believe he’s with us right now.”
“He’s considering his choices and the matter is more personal in nature.
“I believe he ought to talk about it, but everything is fine. We’ll watch how that develops.
Wolff supports Mercedes’s comeback
Since the introduction of new technical restrictions at the beginning of the 2022 season, Mercedes has fallen in the standings of
Formula One.
In that time, Red Bull has dominated at the front of the field, and it has only won one grand prix.
Wolff expressed his continued belief that Mercedes will rise to the front of the field, even if the company has lost some important
personnel over the past year, such as Chief Technical Officer Mike Elliot and Strategy Director James Vowles.
“This time, I have more faith in the group because, at a certain point, you’re essentially checking all the boxes related to the unknown,”
he remarked.
“It’s really obvious where it points to given where we are right now.
Can this compete with Max in a Red Bull? No, it’s not.
“But I’m absolutely certain we’ll succeed at least in putting ourselves back in a position where we can compete for podiums and be
right there.”
