This offseason, the New York Mets must make improvements at the designated hitter position.
This offseason, New York gained notoriety for pursuing Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a great player for the Orix Buffaloes.
The Mets will probably return to their designated hitter after acquiring one or two starters, but they also need to
strengthen their starting rotation.
Thus far in the offseason, the Mets have been linked to a number of sluggers, including a reunion with Justin Turner,
a two-time All-Star. After more than three seasons in New York, he is now a free agent following a successful 2023
campaign with the Boston Red Sox.
Although it’s uncertain where he will end up, the Mets appear to be facing fierce competition for his services. The
Toronto Blue Jays are one team that might express interest, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.
“If (Scott Boras) is seeking a seven-year commitment for (Matt Chapman), some teams may turn their focus
elsewhere, but there’s no doubt he’s among the best players available,” Nicholson-Smith stated. “Other industry
observers have mentioned the Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Angels as potential fits for the 30-year-old.
The San Francisco Giants are seen as a viable landing spot.”
“However, the Blue Jays may be able to wait since, despite the shortage at third base, the DH market has
considerable depth. Although they are somewhat interested in (J.D. Martinez), (Rhys Hoskins), Joc Pederson, Justin
Turner, Joey Votto, and a few other players, they may be able to wait on that front if they know that a talented player
will be available in four or five weeks, possibly at a lower price.”
This is not entirely unexpected. Turner is among the finest alternatives available to the Blue Jays this summer, when
they need help at the designated hitter position as well. Until Yamamoto signs, there probably won’t be much
movement in the free agency market, but don’t be shocked if the Mets soon decide that Turner is their best option.
